Applying for Your AK Permit

When can I apply for a learner’s permit in Alaska?

You can apply for your instruction permit immediately after turning 14 years of age. The permit is valid for 2 years and can be renewed once.  If you have an instruction permit from out of state, you will still be required to have an Alaska instruction permit to drive in the state.

What are the requirements to get my learner’s permit?

You must pass the Alaska written driver’s knowledge test as well as a vision test to receive your Learner’s Permit. Once you receive the permit, you will be required to complete 40 hours of driving practice, which includes at least 10 hours of driving in challenging conditions, such as driving in rain, snow and at night.  You must be accompanied by a licensed driver 21 years of age or older who has a minimum of one year of driving experience in a vehicle that is similar to the one you plan on using.  This person must be seated in the passenger seat at all times.

How many questions are on the Alaska permit test?

There are 20 multiple choice questions on the Alaska permit test.  Questions are based on the information found in key chapters of the Alaska Driver’s Handbook.

You must correctly answer at least 16 of the 20 questions (80%) correctly.
